Salary, Allowances and Other Privileges Sossion Will Enjoy as TSC Commissioner

Teachers Service Commission (TSC) Commissioner Wilson Sossion will earn a gross monthly salary of Ksh 640,681 alongside a package of additional benefits.

Sossion took the oath of office on Thursday, September 10, after President William Ruto formally appointed him to the commission for a six-year term through a special Kenya Gazette Notice dated August 31.

His monthly remuneration includes a basic salary of Ksh384,409, a house allowance of Ksh150,000, and a transport allowance of Ksh30,000 paid in place of an official car.

The package also provides Sossion with Ksh30,000 in monthly airtime, comprehensive medical cover for himself and eligible dependants, and security as advised by the National Police Service.

He will further have access to two cooks, with one stationed in Nairobi and another at his rural home, as well as a designated official personal assistant.

Other benefits to be provided in line with provisions approved by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC).

Sossion’s Journey to TSC

Sossion’s appointment marks a significant shift from his previous role as a teachers’ union leader to serving on the body responsible for managing the country’s teaching workforce.

He served as KNUT Secretary-General from 2013 until June 2021, during which he became one of the most prominent voices in negotiations over teachers’ salaries, promotions and working conditions.

His tenure at the union also saw frequent disagreements with TSC, including disputes over the implementation of collective bargaining agreements, teacher promotions and government policies affecting educators.

The change in roles was raised during his parliamentary vetting, with MPs questioning whether his history as a union official could affect his independence as a commissioner.

Sossion rejected the concerns, telling the Education Committee that his experience advocating for teachers would strengthen the commission rather than undermine it. He said his role had now changed from advocating from the union side to implementing policies agreed upon by the commission.

Ruto’s Appointment

President Ruto nominated Sossion for the TSC position in July 2026 alongside former TSC Director of Staffing Antonina Lentoijoni. The nominees were subsequently vetted by Parliament before their appointments were finalised.

National Assembly Education Committee approved the nominations in August, paving the way for the President to formally appoint the two commissioners.

Ruto formally appointed Sossion and Lentoijoni to six-year terms at the TSC in a Gazette Notice dated August 31.
