Inside Ksh 67 Million M-Pesa Foundation Project Transforming Siaya School

M-Pesa Foundation has handed over a Ksh 67 million infrastructure upgrade at Upanda Comprehensive School in Siaya County, replacing decades-old semi-permanent structures with modern learning facilities.

The project was officially handed over on Thursday, September 17, 2026, at the school located in Upanda Village, Alego-Usonga Sub-County, marking a major change in the learning environment for hundreds of pupils.

Upanda Comprehensive School was established in 1965 and registered as a single-stream primary school in 2024. It currently has 357 learners, comprising 202 boys and 155 girls, who are taught by 11 Teachers Service Commission (TSC) teachers.

M-Pesa Foundation Transforms Learning Facilities

The infrastructure project is aimed at addressing gaps in the school’s learning environment, where pupils had previously relied on ageing semi-permanent structures.

Upgraded facilities provide a more modern setting for learning and are part of the M-Pesa Foundation’s wider investment in education infrastructure and opportunities for children in underserved communities.

School Head of Institution Dorine Juma and Board of Management Chairman Fanuel Omuga are overseeing the institution as it accommodates its growing learner population.

This handover provides the school facilities designed to support teaching and learning while providing pupils with an improved environment for their primary education.

Project Targets Education Gaps in Siaya

This investment comes against a wider education challenge in Siaya County, where access to higher levels of education remains limited despite relatively strong literacy levels.

Census data show that more than 80% of adults in the county are literate, while 63% of residents have attained primary education. However, only 15.8% progress to secondary education or beyond.

Figures indicate that 13% of residents complete secondary education, while 2% reach tertiary institutions and 1% attain university education. About 14% have no formal education.

Infrastructure constraints, including high learner-to-classroom ratios and limited digital facilities, have been identified as some of the challenges affecting progression through the education system.

The M-Pesa Foundation’s Ksh 67 million investment therefore places improved learning infrastructure at the centre of efforts to strengthen foundational education at Upanda Comprehensive School.
