Activist Boniface Mwangi Reveals Ruto’s State House Invite During Gen Z Protests

Activist Boniface Mwangi has claimed that President William Ruto sought to meet him during the height of the Gen Z-led protests, saying he declined an invitation to State House because he believed there was nothing new he could tell the President.

Speaking on the Iko Nini Podcast on Monday, September 22, 2026, Mwangi told the host that President Ruto wanted to understand what Kenyans wanted and was willing to fulfill demands that were within the Constitution.

According to Mwangi, he was told the President wanted a meeting where he could explain the concerns raised by protesters.

Ruto’s Invite

However, the Activist said he chose not to attend because he believed President Ruto already knew what the country wanted after seeing the protests.

“He said, ‘Come, let’s have a meeting. You tell me what you guys want, and I’ll fulfil everything that is within the Constitution,’” Mwangi said, adding that he did not go to State House because he felt there was nothing new to say.

Additionally, Mwangi maintained that the demands being raised by protesters were already clear through placards carried during demonstrations and the messages voiced on the streets.

“I did not go to statehouse because there was nothing I could tell him that is not what he knew,” he said.

He said he believed those concerns had already been communicated publicly during the demonstrations.

The Protests

In addition, these remarks relate to the youth-led protests that gained momentum in 2024 over the Finance Bill before they evolved into broader demonstrations against governance, the cost of living and police misconduct.

Further, the Gen Z protests had thousands of Kenyans take to the streets, with some demonstrations turning deadly following clashes with security officers and goons who broke into businesses.

President Ruto has, at different times, publicly acknowledged hearing the concerns raised by protesters, including withdrawing the Finance Bill after nationwide demonstrations in June 2024.

Mwangi’s story was shared during the podcast interview and reflects his version of events regarding the alleged invitation to meet the President.

Furthermore, he also spoke about the killings conducted by the police during the protests, saying a lot of people were killed, and that is why he told people to stop going to State House.

According to him, marching to the State House would have resulted in even more people being killed, which he did not want because a lot of people were already dead.
