FACT-CHECK: Viral Claim of Man Posing as Lecturer to Steal Students’ Phones

A story has circulated online claiming that a man posed as a lecturer at the University of Eldoret and tricked students into handing over their phones.

A fact-check by Hivileo found that the University of Eldoret has not yet confirmed the claim as of the time of publication.

The allegation, widely shared on social media, claims that the man prepared a fake Continuous Assessment Test (CAT), entered a classroom of first-year students, and presented himself as a lecturer.

Posts state that students began taking the test, with some allegedly using their mobile phones to look for answers.

As a result, the man is said to have confiscated the phones of students he allegedly caught cheating before leaving the university premises.

Viral Claim Alleges Fake University of Eldoret Lecturer Stole Phones

One version of the claim circulating online states that the alleged impostor printed fake university examinations and walked into a classroom where freshers were taking the test.

The post claims that the students, having only been on campus for about two weeks, were unfamiliar with the university’s procedures and immediately began answering the purported examination.

“Last week, A sharp boy printed fake university exams for freshers, walked into Eldoret University and handed them out.The freshers started answering immediately. Most pulled out their phones to try to cheat, since they had only been on campus two weeks and were completely clueless!” read part of the claim

It further alleges that the man opened his bag and began collecting phones from students who were allegedly using them to cheat.

By the end of the purported CAT, the man had collected more than 20 phones before disappearing from the university.

“The guy opened his bag and started confiscating phones from anyone who was cheating. By the end of the CAT he had harvested over 20 gadgets. Then he vanished. Nobody has seen him since,” Claims states.

Meanwhile, the claim that a man posed as a lecturer at the University of Eldoret and stole students’ phones remains unverified and unconfirmed by the institution.

There is currently no publicly available confirmation from the University of Eldoret establishing that the incident occurred as described.
