Young Man Dies at Bar After Reportedly Drinking Alcohol

Nairobi County official Geoffrey Mosiria has raised concerns over alcohol regulation after a young man reportedly died at a bar in Kahawa Sukari, where he had gone to drink.

In a statement dated September 23, Mosiria said the young man arrived at the bar at around 8 a.m. before later combining three chairs and lying down on them.

He was subsequently found dead at the same location.

“Today, a young man lost his life in Kahawa Sukari, where he had gone around 8am to drink alcohol. He took alcohol and later combined three chairs, slept on them, and was found dead there,” Mosiria stated.

Mosiria Urges Tighter Regulation of Bars and Alcohol Sales

The county officer claimed that the establishment was operating as a nightclub without displaying the required legal documents.

He also alleged that the bar was selling alcohol suspected to be illegal.

As a result, Mosiria called on the Kiambu County Government to ensure that bars operating in residential areas are properly regulated and that establishments found operating illegally are closed.

He noted that such measures would help protect people living in neighbourhoods where alcohol establishments operate.

“The bar operates as a nightclub without legal documents displayed and sells alcohol suspected to be illegal. I call upon the County Government of Kiambu to ensure that all bars operating in residential areas are properly regulated and those operating illegally are closed down to protect members of the public who are their neighbours,”

Furthermore, Mosiria called on the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) to ensure that all alcoholic drinks sold to the public are legal and meet the required safety standards.

He also urged the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) to conduct routine inspections to curb the sale of illegal alcohol, while calling on the Ministry of Interior to strengthen licensing regulations for bars and other establishments selling alcoholic drinks.

Calls for Responsible Alcohol Consumption

Beyond regulating alcohol outlets, the proposal also included measures targeting people who consume alcohol.

He argued that alcohol consumers should be able to meet their basic needs and support their families, while also having the ability to cater for potential health, hospital and rehabilitation costs.

“Those consuming alcohol should also be licensed and should provide proof that they are able to cater for their health insurance, hospital and rehabilitation bills in case they get sick.”

Mosiria further urged people who drink alcohol to control the quantities they consume.

He said alcohol should not be used as a means of filling one’s stomach but should instead be consumed for enjoyment and in controlled quantities.
