Ruto Mourns Wicknell Chivayo and Wife After Fatal Helicopter Crash

President William Ruto has mourned Zimbabwean businessman Wicknell Chivayo, describing him as a dear friend following his death in a helicopter crash in Zimbabwe.

Ruto shared his condolence message on Thursday, October 1, hours after Chivayo and his wife, Lucy Muteke, were confirmed among six people who died in the crash in Marondera Rural, southeast of Harare.

“I am deeply saddened by the tragic passing of my friend, Wicknell Chivayo, together with his wife, Lucy Muteke, and the other lives lost in the helicopter crash in Zimbabwe. Their sudden departure is a painful loss to their families, friends and all who knew them,” Ruto said.

According to Zimbabwean authorities, the helicopter crashed at around 5 pm on Wednesday, September 30, killing all six people on board.

Following the crash, authorities confirmed Chivayo and Muteke among the victims as investigations into the incident began.

Friendship of Ruto and Wicknell Chivayo

Beyond the tragedy, Chivayo had maintained a close friendship with Ruto and frequently shared photographs and videos of his meetings with the Kenyan President.

Reflecting on their relationship, Ruto described the Zimbabwean businessman as someone whose warmth touched many people.

“Wicknell was a dear friend whose warmth touched many people. I will remember him for his friendship, his energy and his deep conviction in the possibilities of our continent,” Ruto said.

Over time, their public interactions included meetings at State House in Nairobi and other engagements in Kenya.

Chivayo also attended the traditional engagement ceremony of Ruto’s daughter, Charlene, in Kilgoris, Narok County, in August 2026.

Ruto mourns other crash victims

Meanwhile, Ruto extended his condolences to the families of the other people who died in the crash and to the people of Zimbabwe.

“I convey my deepest condolences to the families of all those who lost their lives, to President Mnangagwa, the people of Zimbabwe and everyone mourning this tragic loss,” Ruto said.

In addition, Zimbabwean government spokesperson Nick Mangwana said the helicopter was carrying Chivayo, three other passengers and two pilots.

As investigations continue, authorities are working to establish the circumstances that led to the fatal crash.

Finally, Ruto offered a prayer for Chivayo, Muteke and the other victims.

“May God grant Wicknell, Lucy and all those who perished eternal rest,” he said.
