Ruto Mourns 17 Catholic Pilgrims Killed in Salama Road Accident Involving Matatu and Lorry

President William Ruto has mourned 17 pilgrims from St Mathias Mulumba Catholic Church, Mikindani Parish, who died in a road accident at Salama while travelling to the National Shrine in Subukia for the National Prayer Day.
In a statement dated October 3, 2026, Ruto described the deaths as a tragic loss, sending his condolences to the victims’ families, friends, parishioners and the wider Catholic community.
“Our heartfelt condolences go to the families, friends, parishioners and the entire Catholic community who are mourning this painful loss,” Ruto said.
He said the government stood with those affected as they mourned the pilgrims, while praying for strength, comfort and peace for their families and loved ones.
“We also pray for the swift recovery of those injured in the accident. May the souls of the departed rest in eternal peace,” he added.
The 17 pilgrims were travelling from Mikindani in Mombasa towards Subukia when the crash occurred at Salama along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway.
The accident involved a lorry and a 14-seater matatu carrying the pilgrims. Seven other victims were reportedly taken to Sultan Hamud Sub-County Hospital for treatment.
