Former Prime Minister and ODM party leader the late Raila Odinga, held a consultative meeting with senior officials of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) at the Serena Hotel on October 3, 2025, just days before his death.

According to a statement issued by ODM on the same day, the meeting focused on preparations for the party’s 20th anniversary celebrations, which had initially been scheduled to take place in Mombasa from October 10 to 12, 2025.

However, Raila died on October 15, 2025, while in India, 12 days after the meeting. Following the announcement of his death, Parliament adjourned its sitting to honour the former Prime Minister.

Raila Agrees to Expand ODM@20 Celebrations to More Counties Days Before His Death

ODM said its officials used the October 3 meeting to brief Raila on the progress of preparations for the ODM@20 celebrations.

The party explained that it had already held anniversary activities in Busia, Wajir, Kisii and Narok counties.

“This morning, we held a consultative meeting with our Party Leader, the Rt. Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga, at the Serena Hotel. The meeting centered on the progress of preparations for the ODM@20 celebrations that were initially scheduled to take place in Mombasa County from 10th to 12th October 2025,” ODM stated.

However, ODM said it had continued receiving requests from other parts of the country to extend the celebrations to their counties.

According to the party, the requests were aimed at allowing more supporters and members who might not be able to travel to Mombasa to participate in the anniversary celebrations.

“In our briefing to the Party Leader, we highlighted the ongoing demands and requests from counties that we have not yet visited in the course of our party’s anniversary engagements,” ODM stated.

Following the consultations, ODM said Raila agreed to the proposal to expand the anniversary programme before the main celebrations in Mombasa.

The party said the decision was intended to make the celebrations more inclusive by allowing more counties to participate.

As a result, the main ODM@20 celebrations in Mombasa were postponed from October 10–12 to November 14–16, 2025 as the party noted that the expanded programme would culminate in the grand celebrations in Mombasa.
