Why WhatsApp Users Are Suddenly Deleting Their Usernames and What It Means

Recently, WhatsApp rolled out a new feature of optional usernames, which allows people to communicate without revealing their phone numbers for privacy.

However, although many users loved the usernames feature because of the privacy that comes with it, some have started deleting their usernames for various reasons.

Deleting the usernames also deletes contacts from people who had not saved the number initially, which makes it hard to reach someone when they are offline.

This makes it hard for people to find others, especially during emergencies. Without a saved phone number, one cannot make calls or send text messages when they are offline.

Business Owners

On the same note, the same problem is causing concern among users who usually rely on WhatsApp for critical communication, for example, business owners.

Business owners who set usernames put their business at risk because customers may want to reach out via calls to make orders or plan deliveries.

It also makes it hard for people to prove if the business is an honest one since there are a lot of scammers recently who take advantage of vulnerable buyers.

Many people prefer knowing they can still communicate offline via calls or text messages especially when they are somewhere without an internet connection.

Internet Issues

In Kenya, most people have internet in their homes, but when they leave, they prefer making phone calls or text messages to communicate, and usernames are a barrier to that effective communication.

To avoid all this, many people are opting to delete their usernames from the app’s settings to make communication easy and effective in case of lack of internet or when a person is offline.

Deleting the usernames guarantees that people still remain reachable via their phone numbers when they are not online on WhatsApp.

Despite many people deleting their usernames, there are some people who have still remained with them for the advantages that come with it.

Advantages include keeping the phone number staying hidden from people whom they do not want to share the number with, while also not being able to be reached offline.
