Heavy Rains Force Closure of Major Highway

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced the closure of the Kapyeego–Chesoi–Kilangata (B15) Road following torrential rains that caused severe damage and fatalities in parts of Elgeyo Marakwet County.

In a cautionary public notice dated November 2, 2025, the Authority said the road closure affects key sections at Kilangata, Murkutwo, Chesongoch, and Kabetwa, where heavy rainfall led to flooding and landslides.

The statement indicated that the situation had caused loss of life, prompting immediate intervention by relevant government agencies.

“A multi-agency rescue mission is currently underway with the Ministry of Interior and National Coordination, KeNHA, and the County Government of Elgeyo Marakwet at the site,” the notice read in part.

Road Collapse at River Mon

The Authority further confirmed that a vented drift across River Mon at Chesetan, along the Biretwo–Arror Road, was completely washed away by the storm.

The collapse left the road cut off by approximately 40 meters, making it impassable for motorists and isolating parts of the region.

KeNHA noted that its engineers and rescue teams are on the ground, working around the clock to access affected areas and clear debris caused by the heavy downpour.

“The Authority is currently working tirelessly to access the affected sections and remove the massive boulders and debris resulting from the heavy storm water,” it stated.

Appeal to Motorists

KeNHA has urged motorists using the affected route to seek alternative roads and plan their journeys accordingly.

The Authority emphasized that the closure is purely for safety reasons as ongoing efforts continue to restore connectivity.

“We urge all motorists plying these sections of the road to replan their journeys, as the roads remain closed for safety reasons,” the notice added.
