The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has responded to claims that politicians will bring foreigners to vote in the 2027 election.
In an interview on September 8, IEBC Commissioner Dr. Alutalala Mukhwana dismissed all the allegations that 2027 general elections will be rigged.
Mukhwana asked politicians to stop making such allegations stating they are unfair to the voters.
“Those are some of the things I have said when they come out and the common hears them, they lose hope. Because you are telling them it does not matter whether they wake up to go and vote, we have plan B which is beyond your control. That is not a fair allegation, if they are making them,” he said.
The Commissioner asked Kenyans to dismiss politicians making allegations that the 2027 presidential elections will be rigged in favour of certain candidates.
He stated that the Commissioner is sometimes uncomfortable with the remarks made by some leaders with followers across the country.
Besides, he stated that the allegations can be counterproductive to the credibility of the election, cause voter apathy and interfere with the nation’s peace and stability.
“Leave politicians alone. It is not possible to top up votes for any candidate. From where we sit, it is not possible to steal an election. We have no choice, our mandate is to remian independent. The systems are set up such that, it is not possible to steal an election in Kenya.,” Mukhwana stated.
He explained that the IEBC does not have the powers to stop politicians from making such statements before the electioneering period officially starts.
Mukhwana said it is difficult for IEBC to control such conversations because the electoral code only sets in once the election has been announced.
“It worries us those remarks made in certain conversations diminish the trust of the public in the credibility of the IEBC,” he said.
