Top Football Managers Sacked in 2025

Share

Several clubs evidently felt the need to save their respective campaigns from further turmoil as they look to either avoid relegation or do their utmost to live up to pre-season expectations.

It took a while for the manager’s sacking to get going in the 2024/2025 and 2025/26 seasons

Erik Ten Hag

Manchester United sacked Erik Ten Hag on October 28, 2024, following a 2-1 defeat to West Ham United.

The club sat in 14th place after nine games, having already recorded its fourth defeat of the season.

Currently, he’s a free agent, having been sacked as the head coach of Bayer Leverkusen in September 2025 after only three games.

Steve Cooper

On November 24, 2024, the Foxes released a statement that they were parting ways with Cooper.

Defeats to Forest, Manchester United, and Chelsea prompted the club to dismiss him after only twelve games in charge.

He left the club two points above the relegation zone.

The decision shocked people from outside the club. He is currently the head coach of Danish club Brondby.

Gary O’Neill

He was sacked in December 2024 following a poor start to his second season with just 9 points from 16 games, a league-high 40 goals conceded, and 20 of them shipped from set pieces.

He was replaced by Victor Pereira, who was later sacked.

Eleven months after being sacked, Wolves wanted him back, but he turned down the chance as he only wants to return to management once the right opportunity presents itself.

Russel Martin

He was sacked as Southampton head coach in December 2024 following the team’s disappointing start to the Premier League season, which culminated in a 5-0 defeat against Tottenham Hotspur.

He departed the club having taken 5 points from 16 games.

Early this year, he was appointed as Rangers head coach but sacked in October 2025 just after seventeen games in charge.

His final match was against Falkirk, which ended with a 1-1 draw, after which he was escorted by police as fans attempted to stop the team bus leaving.

Ange Postecoglou

He was sacked on June 6, 2025, as Tottenham manager 16 days after leading them to victory in the Europa League final.

A 1-0 win over Manchester United in Bilbao brought Spurs the first major trophy after 17 years.

However, it came towards the end of their worst Premier League season, with the London club finishing 17th after losing 22 of their 38 matches.

The Australian told fans “season three is better than season two” as they gathered at a victory parade to mark European success in his second campaign.

Postecoglou, 60, later signed a two-year deal at the City Ground on September 9, following the departure of Nuno Espirito Santo, but lost six times and managed just two draws during his 39-day tenure.

Forest were beaten 3-0 at home by Chelsea, and within 20 minutes of the full-time whistle, the club announced Postecoglou had been dismissed.

By that time, he had already left the City Ground.

Sean Dyche

On January 9, 2025, Dyche was dismissed by Everton, three hours before an FA Cup third-round home tie with Peterborough United.

By the time of his dismissal, Everton were only one point above the relegation zone, having only won three of their last nineteen games in the 2024-25 season.

The ex-Burnley and Everton boss has joined Nottingham Forest on a two-year contract and said owner Evangelos Marinakis has made clear that stabilising the club and returning it to winning ways will be only the start of his role.

Julen Lopetegui

He was sacked as West Ham United’s head coach in January 2025, after being appointed in May 2024. He was dismissed due to the team’s poor performance and a lack of ambition being met.

Less than eight months into his two-year contract, the former Spain and Wolves manager was replaced by Graham Potter, and in May 2025, he was appointed as the head coach of the Qatar national team

Nuno Espirito Santos

The position of the Portuguese coach had been uncertain for two weeks since he publicly declared his relationship with owner Evangelos Marinakis had deteriorated. In August, Nuno revealed he feared for his job.

Internal tensions at the club were believed to centre around disagreements over their transfer business. He was relieved of his duties on September 9, 2025.

Currently, he’s the head coach of Premier League club West Ham United, where he was appointed in September 2025.

Igor Tudor

Juventus fired coach Igor Tudor following three straight losses and an eight-match winless run.

By the time of his sacking, Juventus had not won since Sept. 13, and the announcement came a day after the team’s latest loss was a 1-0 defeat to Lazio ,its fourth straight match without scoring a goal.

That left Juventus eighth in Serie A, six points below joint leaders Napoli and Roma and three below fourth-place Inter Milan.

Juventus also had just two points from its three Champions League matches.

Patrick Vieira

Patrick Vieira has been sacked by Genoa after seeing his team slide down the Serie A table.

The former Arsenal star oversaw a 2-0 home loss against newly promoted Cremonese in his final match in charge, leaving the Rossoblu bottom of the table

Stefano Pioli

The tenure of Stefano Pioli at Fiorentina was brief. The manager could not withstand the series of poor results and was officially sacked on November 4, 2025, two days after a defeat to Lecce in the Serie A.

Fiorentina confirmed Pioli’s departure in an official statement published on the club’s website, with a short message of gratitude for his services.

His stint lasted just 14 games, with four wins, four draws, and six losses.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Turkish giants Besiktas confirmed the departure of head coach Solskjaer on August 29, 2025, just eight months after the Norwegian joined the club.

The decision was taken by the club’s board following their exit from the Conference League play-off round.

Besiktas lost the second leg of the tie 1-0 at home as Lausanne qualified for the league phase, winning the fixture 2-1 on aggregate.

Jose Mourinho

Fenerbahce sacked Portuguese coach Jose Mourinho on August 29, 2025, two days after elimination from the Champions League playoffs by Benfica, the Turkish club said in a statement.

“We have parted ways with Jose Mourinho, who served as head coach of our professional A team since the 2024-2025 season.

We thank him for his efforts for our team and wish him success in his future career,” Friday’s statement said.

Jose Mourinho’s current team is Benfica, where he was appointed head coach in September 2025.

This is his second stint with the Portuguese club, and his contract is through the 2026/27 season, though it includes an option for the club and him to decide not to continue after the 2025/26 season.

Ivan Juric

Atalanta BC officially sacked head coach Ivan Jurić on November 13, 2025, after a poor start to the Serie A season.

The Croatian manager was dismissed only a few hours after a 3-0 home loss to Sassuolo, which dropped the club to 13th place in the table.

Jurić’s time in charge began in June with high hopes but ended after just five months.

The former Torino coach struggled to bring back the energy and attacking style that once made Atalanta so exciting to watch.

His team managed only three wins in eleven matches and often looked short of confidence.

Graham Potter

On September 27, 2025, Potter was dismissed by West Ham United following poor results and performances over the course of the second half of the 2024-25 season and the start of the 2025-26 season.

At the time, West Ham were 19th in the league, having won one of their opening five league games

Bruno Lage

Bruno Lage is currently a free agent after being sacked by Benfica in September 2025 following a Champions League defeat.

He was in his second stint as the club’s manager after a previous spell from 2019-2020.
