Leonard Wamuthende: Profile of Newly Elected Mbeere North MP

Leonard Wamuthende, who is popularly known as “Leo,” is the Member of Parliament (MP) elect of Mbeere North Constituency.

Wamuthende was born in Kianthawa village in Nthawa ward, Mbeere North constituency.

On November 27, 2025, in a by-election, he garnered 15,802 votes, narrowly beating DP candidate Newton Kariuki in the parliamentary race, who secured 15,308 votes.

Mbeere North MP seat was left vacant after Geoffrey Ruku was appointed by President William Ruto to be in charge of the Public Service Ministry.

Educational Background

Wamuthende was schooled at Siakago Primary School, and after finishing primary education, he joined St. Paul’s Kevote High School.

His excellent performance in his academic journey attracted sponsors like Plan International that catered to his education.

After completing secondary school, he attained a university entry grade.

Leo joined the University of Nairobi, where he earned a degree in Biochemistry, graduating with First Class Honors.

After completion of tertiary studies, he worked in various medical and pharmaceutical companies.

Career and Political Journey

After the November 27 by-elections, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) declared Leonard Wamuthende as the MP-elect of Mbeere North Constituency.

He contested through the ruling party, United Democratic Alliance (UDA), which helped him to secure victory in the region.

In 2007, he co-founded his first company in the pharmaceutical industry.

Wamuthende threw himself into the political arena in 2017 when he contested for the Embu gubernatorial seat and was defeated by his rival, Martin Wambora.

After failing to clinch power, he pushed development initiatives and his business.

In the 2022 general elections, Leo backed William Ruto for president and Ruku for the Mbeere North MP seat.

Wamuthende also founded two firms that focused on medical equipment and hospital systems in 2023.
