Steve Ltumbesi Lelegwe is the Senator for Samburu County, serving his second term after defending his seat on a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party ticket in 2022.
He was born on September 14, 1981, in Samburu County, a region that has been known for decades by its pastoralist communities and cultural heritage in Northern Kenya.
Education Background
Lelegwe’s primary and secondary school education background is not disclosed to the public.
In 2002, he joined the University of Nairobi, where he pursued a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry and completed his studies in 2006.
Later, he rejoined to University of Nairobi in 2010 and enrolled in a Master of Arts degree in Project Planning and Management and finished in 2012.
Lelegwe further pursued a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Project Planning and Management from 2014 – 2018 in the same institution.
From 2018 to 2021, he enrolled in Master’s in Public Administration.
Before joining the political arena, Steve worked in public administration agencies, gaining experience in electoral processes and grassroots governance.
He served as Deputy Returning Officer/County Returning Officer (DRO/CRO) in 2010 and 2012 at the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
He oversees the electoral activities at the county level.

Lelegwe officially joined politics in 2013 general elections.
He contested for the position of Speaker of the Samburu County Assembly and emerged victorious.
After gaining experience as the Speaker, he contested for the Senatorial seat of Samburu in the 2017 general elections.
He vied through the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) ticket and defeated his close rival Sammy Leshore.
In the 2022 general elections, Lelegwe transitioned to the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party led by President William Ruto.
He was re-elected as Senator, garnering 40,066 votes, defeating his closest rival, Lkitonga Lengolos of Jubilee Party.
Steve Lelegwe was appointed as the Vice Chairperson of the Senate Committee on Roads, Transportation, and Housing.
In this position, he played a vital role in implementing matters in relation to infrastructure and urban development.

In addition, he became a member of the Committee on National Security, Defence and Foreign Relations and the County Public Accounts Committee.
During his tenure, he sponsored the Livestock Protection and Sustainability Bill (Senate Bill No. 32 of 2024), aimed at safeguarding the economic interests of pastoralists and promoting sustainable livestock practices.
He was also an active member of the Pastoralist Parliamentary Group (PPG), serving on its Executive Committee.
