Alleged Mobile Money Payments Rock Ol Kalou By-Election as Justin Muturi Calls for Probe

Former Attorney General Justin Muturi calls for investigations into allegations of voter bribery through mobile money transfers urging IEBC to address the claims.

In a post shared on his social media platforms, Muturi called on the IEBC chairperson Erastus Ethekon and the relevant investigative agencies to investigate the matter.

Muturi alleges that the people of Ol Kalou are being bribed using mobile money in order to influence their votes.

“I am calling upon IEBC Chairperson Erastus Ethekon and the relevant law enforcement agencies to speak up and investigate this allegations of offensive and outright bribery using mobile money transfer,” he said.

He also questioned the role of Safaricom noting that the company has been contracted by the IEBC to provide telecommunication infrastructure and technical support during electoral process.

Additionally, he called on Safaricom CEO Peter Ndegwa to explain the alleged mobile money transactions saying that Kenyans deserve answers.

Muturi says that if the claims are found to be true then Kenyans will need both Ndegwa and Ethekon to resign.

“If True we need nothing but resignation of both Ekethon and Ndegwa,” he said on X.

His post was followed by photos of phones showing messages from M-pesa which he claims are bribes for the people of Ol Kalou to tamper with the votes.

Neither IEBC or Safaricom has responded to these claims by the time of publication.

There has also been no official confirmation from investigative agencies regarding Muturi’s allegations.

These claims come amid the heightened tensions in Ol Kalou as the by election for the member of parliament seat takes place.

Online Reactions

Netizens on X have reacted to the matter with many saying that the m-pesa messages are not real but are AI generated while calling out Muturi for clout chasing.

“Former attorney general can’t differentiate fake messages and real mesages,” Juma said.

“These are fake manufactured messages to depict your opponent in bad light. No such messages are transmitted from MPESA transactions. You can do better,” said Wakastone.
