Former Ugandan Speaker Anita Among has withdrawn from the Speakership race for the 12th Parliament after security operatives raided her home in an ongoing corruption investigation.

In a statement on May 17, Among said the decision is meant to ensure harmony prevails in Uganda’s Ruling Party, the National Resistance Movement (NRM).

“After wide consultations and deep introspection, and to maintain harmony and clarity in my beloved party, the NRM, I wish to categorically and unequivocally state that I will not be offering myself for the Speakership race of the 12th Parliament,” Among said.

Amond thanked President Yoweri Museveni, the NRM Party, and the members for allowing her to serve as Deputy Speaker and Speaker.

“I am greatly indebted to President Museveni, my party, the NRM, and members of the 11th Parliament for giving me the opportunity to serve as Deputy Speaker and Speaker. I am equally indebted to my family and friends for the solidarity and support they have extended to me over the last five years,” she said.

Among said she will support the candidates who will be endorsed by President Museveni and asked the members of the 12th Parliament to do the same.

Corruption Investigations

Among has come under renewed scrutiny after a joint security operation involving police and military officers raided her residence in Kampala as part of an ongoing corruption investigation.

According to local reports, the raid was conducted by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) with support from the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), targeting alleged illicit enrichment and money laundering linked to her tenure as Speaker.

The operation is part of a broader anti-corruption probe that has seen authorities investigate senior officials over the misuse of public funds and unexplained wealth.
