Formerly Director General of National Financial Investigation Agency in Equatorial Guinea Beltasar Engonga has ben released from prison after serving less than 2 years in his 18 years sentence.
Bioko Provincial Tribunal had sentenced Engonga to eight years of prison on 27 August 2025 for misuse of public funds and enrichment.
According to the court’s verdict, Engonga had embezzled the money as professional travel expenses which was meant to cover all work-related expenses and used it for his personal benefit by opening anomalous bank accounts where only he was a signatory.

He was ordered to reimburse 125,405,700 XAF, approximately $220,000 to the state.
“The accused made off with money belonging to the public treasury, including from insurance companies” reads the ruling of the Supreme Court.
As head of ANIF which investigates financial crime including money laundering, prosecutors claim that Engonga along with other five officials have siphoned a hundred of thousands of dollars from state coffers during a period of 12 years.
Prosecutors had asked eight years imprisonment for misuse of funds, 6 years and one day for abuse of power, and 4 years and 5 months for illicit enrichment.

Engonga, a 55-year-old official, was dismissed from his post in November 2024 after videos containing apparent sexual encounters with explicit materials and allegedly starring himself went viral online.
The recordings were captured by officials carrying out a corruption investigation, a claim that Engonga denied in court while stating that his agency didn’t receive any separate funds for use other than travel expenses.
“The budget only gave travel expense to the ministry, no individual budgets to the director-general” declared Engonga.
The case garnered significant international scrutiny for its subject’s close links to President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo.
His father is the president of the Commission of the Central African Economic and Monetary Community.
Seven out of eight officials standing trial along with Engonga were found guilty.
Sereijo Esua was acquitted of any crime, and a luxury vehicle seized in the course of the investigation was returned.
