Car Bursts Into Flames Along Nairobi-Mombasa Highway

A private vehicle burst into flames and was destroyed after a collision along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway on May 10, 2026.

The incident occurred after a Volkswagen Golf reportedly rammed into the rear of a Mercedes Actros trailer travelling in the same direction toward Mombasa.

Moments after the impact, the saloon car burst into flames and left the driver with significant losses.

Athi River East Sub-County Police Commander Anderson Mbae confirmed the incident, stating that officers were dispatched to the scene shortly after the car crash was reported.

“The accident happened at about 7:15 am at the Athi River Bridge along Nairobi Mombasa highway near Crystal Rivers Estate involving a motor vehicle Volkswagen Golf driven and a trailer of Mercedes Actros make,” Mbae said.

According to preliminary details, the crash happened at about 7:15 a.m. at the Athi River Bridge section of the highway, near Crystal Rivers Estate.

Residents were seen attempting to put out the flames moments after the crash, with the fire spreading rapidly through the vehicle before firefighters arrived and took over the operation.

Firefighters later arrived at the scene and managed to put out the fire using high-pressure water hoses.

Firefighters Put Out Fire

Their intervention helped prevent the fire from escalating further along the road, although the vehicle had already been extensively damaged.

No fatalities were reported in the incident, and the driver is said to have escaped safely before the fire fully consumed the car.

Traffic along the Nairobi Mombasa Highway was briefly affected as motorists slowed down to navigate the affected section, leading to a temporary traffic buildup along the busy route.

This latest incident adds to recent road accidents involving heavy commercial trucks and private vehicles along the key highway this year, raising renewed concerns over road safety on the highway.

Police have launched investigations to establish the exact cause of the crash, including whether speeding or improper lane usage contributed to the collision.
