Chaos Erupts at Mtwapa Wedding After Groom Refuses to Pay Bride Viewing Fee

Mtwapa wedding, Mombasa, reportedly descended into chaos after the groom refused to pay a mandatory fee to see his bride.

The disagreement escalated when members of the groom’s entourage allegedly forced their way into the bride’s family home.

A short video clip from the incident shows several men pushing each other as tension rises. Some of them appear to exchange blows as the confrontation turns physical.

People can also be heard shouting, “Vunja, vunja, toka hapa, kwendeni huko,” as the commotion continues.

The men eventually break through a door while women inside can be heard shouting.

The incident has since sparked mixed reactions online, with some social media users describing the events as part of coastal wedding traditions, while others criticised the confrontation.

Social Media Users React to the Mtwapa Wedding 

Bern joked about the incident, writing, “ndoa ishaanza na vita hahahahahaha hii italast kweli.”

Sylus criticised some wedding traditions and compared them to practices in Central Kenya.

“This should also happen to Central with their useless ruracios that leave the groom broke with fines.”

John jokingly suggested that the people involved should be recruited for their skills.

“We need these people to occupy State House. Wako na skills,” he wrote.

Matis criticised the incident and described the behaviour as unacceptable.

“This is a stupid behavior from the coastal region usually associated with. I have witnessed this behavior through a friend and he almost decided to cancel the event due to the stupidity of this kind. They should stop this nonsense culture and let it be over.”

Ndaga also criticised the confrontation, saying the description of the men involved should be changed.

“Substitute ‘.. groom’s entourage’ with ‘.. groom’s goons’ coz that is goonish behavior 🥺.”

Mchonyi said such incidents are not limited to Muslim weddings or the Coast.

“That’s usually the case in our weddings and its not only Muslim weddings; even in Christian weddings on the eve of the wedding day.”

Shiku questioned whether the bride’s family would still go ahead with the marriage after the incident.

“Quick question, after this do you give your daughter to this clown and his circus?”

OJ Gamer, who said he had filmed similar weddings, described the incident as something that can happen before matters are eventually settled.

“Nobody gets hurt; I have filmed some of their weddings and this happens then everything gets settled. I almost packed my Gears😂.”

Safari also described the incident as a cultural norm at the Coast rather than an unusual occurrence.

“I thought hii ni kawaida Uku coast, it’s not chaos but a cultural norm.”

The short clip has continued to attract reactions online, with Kenyans debating whether such wedding confrontations should be viewed as cultural traditions or condemned as unnecessary violence.
