CS Ogamba Announces Changes to 4 University Councils

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos Ogamba has announced new appointments and a reappointment to the councils of three universities and one university college, with the changes taking effect on August 7, 2026.

Ogamba announced the changes through four Gazette Notices dated Friday, August 7, 2026, covering the Open University of Kenya, Nyandarua University College, Laikipia University, and Meru University of Science and Technology.

The notices set three-year terms for the newly appointed and reappointed council members.

CS Ogamba Reappoints Open University Council Members

First, Ogamba reappointed Ezra Maritim as Chairperson of the Council of the Open University of Kenya and also reappointed Lawrence Muchilwa, Susan Kiragu and McOkwiri Kevin Juma alongside Maritim.

“IN EXERCISE of the powers conferred by section 36 (1) of the Universities Act, 2012, the Cabinet Secretary for Education re-appoints—Under subsection (a)—Ezra Maritim (Prof.) – Chairperson; Under subsection (d)—Lawrence Muchilwa, Susan Kiragu (Dr.), McOkwiri Kevin Juma (Dr.), as the Non-Executive Chairperson and Members of the Council of the Open University of Kenya, for a period of three (3) years, with effect from the 7th August, 2026,” the notice read.

Nyandarua University College Gets Five Members

Meanwhile, CS Ogamba appointed Mumbi Kahindu, Christine Jepyegon Ronoh, Job Wafula Chelongo, Kariuki Peter Maru and Julius G. Obare Mokogi to the Council of Nyandarua University College.

“IN EXERCISE of the powers conferred by section 36 (1) (d) of the Universities Act, the Cabinet Secretary for Education appoints—Mumbi Kahindu, Christine Jepyegon Ronoh, Job Wafula Chelongo, Kariuki Peter Maru, Julius G. Obare Mokogi (CPA), to be Members of the Council of the Nyandarua University College, for a period of three (3) years, with effect from the 7th August, 2026,” the notice stated.

Laikipia University Gets New Council Member

In addition, Ogamba appointed Fatuma Abdi to the Council of Laikipia University for a three-year term starting August 7, 2026.

He also revoked Gazette Notice No. 11252 of 2026, which the new notice referenced in relation to the appointment.

“IN EXERCISE of the powers conferred by section 36 (1) (d) of the Universities Act, as read with section 51 (1) of the Interpretation and General Provisions Act, the Cabinet Secretary for Education appoints—FATUMA ABDI to be a Member of the Council of Laikipia University, for a period of three (3) years, with effect from the 7th August, 2026. Gazette Notice No. 11252 of 2026 is revoked,” the notice stated.

Meru University Appoints Council Member

Elsewhere, Ogamba appointed David Gikungu to the Council of Meru University of Science and Technology for a three-year term starting August 7, 2026.

“IN EXERCISE of the powers conferred by section 36 (1) (d) of the Universities Act, the Cabinet Secretary for Education appoints—DAVID GIKUNGU (DR.) to be a Member of the Council of Meru University of Science and Technology, for a period of three (3) years, with effect from the 7th August, 2026,” the notice said.
