“Hii Ni Mbaya!” Mosiria Proposes Law to Regulate Coffin Transportation in Kenya

Nairobi County official Geoffrey Mosiria has called on Parliament to consider introducing a law to regulate the transportation of coffins on roads, arguing that uncovered coffins could distress other road users, particularly sick patients travelling to hospitals.
In a statement dated Saturday, August 8, 2026, Mosiria urged coffin sellers and transporters to ensure coffins are fully covered when being transported to protect other road users from potentially distressing scenes.
“All coffin sellers should ensure that when transporting their coffins, they are fully covered to protect other road users, especially sick patients heading to hospitals. The moment they see coffins on the roads, some lose hope and feel discouraged about their chances of healing,” read part of the statement.
Mosiria Wants Coffins Covered During Transport
Mosiria said some patients travelling to hospitals could lose hope or become discouraged when they encounter coffins being transported on the roads.
He also said that some people could faint when they see coffins, describing the sight as potentially traumatising.
“It’s really tough; you’re driving your car outside, and suddenly you see a coffin car fall on your feet. And they haven’t closed those coffins. There are people who are having problems, pressure, stress. When they see the coffin, they fall. Some even go to the hospital, and when they see the coffin, they lose hope of ever seeing each other again,” said Mosiria.

As a result, Mosiria called on Parliament to consider developing legislation governing the transportation of coffins, adding that such regulations would ensure that coffins are properly covered while being transported and help minimise distress among members of the public.
In his remarks, Mosiria also expressed concern over incidents where coffins being transported could fall from vehicles onto roads.
He questioned why transporters would allow coffins to remain exposed and raised concerns about the impact such scenes could have on drivers, passengers and people travelling to hospitals.
Public Distress Linked to Uncovered Coffin Transportation
Mosiria further said that some people experiencing health problems, pressure and stress could be particularly affected by encountering such scenes on the road.
Mosiria maintained that covering coffins during transportation would help protect other road users from distressing scenes.
His proposal comes after he shared a video of a vehicle transporting an uncovered coffin where he argued that it had caused him anxiety.
In the video, Mosiria was heard asking the driver why the coffin was being transported uncovered and questioning whether such a practice was considered normal during transportation.
Meanwhile, the county officer called for the issue to be addressed through regulations that would require coffin transporters to take measures to keep coffins covered while being transported on public roads.
