David Maraga Appoints United Green Movement Secretariat Leadership Team

United Green Movement presidential flagbearer, Chief Justice (Emeritus) David Maraga, established his campaign secretariat on July 20, 2026. The secretariat is based in Kileleshwa, Nairobi, and will coordinate the presidential campaign activities.

During the launch, Maraga appointed two senior officials to lead the campaign leadership team. The appointments aim to strengthen campaign planning, policy development, communication, and public engagement.

Furthermore, the new leadership structure assigns specific responsibilities to each official. The team will guide the campaign as it prepares for the 2027 presidential election cycle.

Leadership Structure and Core Mandates of the United Green Movement Secretariat

The newly established secretariat has divided its responsibilities between two key officials. First, Ms. Mkawasi Mcharo serves as the Co-Executive Director of the Presidential Campaign Secretariat.

She will oversee campaign strategy, policy formulation, and diaspora affairs. Therefore, her role will focus on developing campaign programmes and strengthening engagement with different communities.

Meanwhile, Mr. David Makali will serve as the Communication Coordinator. He will direct campaign communication, media relations, and messaging strategies.

In addition, he will manage interactions between the campaign and various media platforms. His role will ensure that the campaign communicates its agenda effectively to the public. Consequently, the communication team will focus on building a consistent and clear campaign message.

Professional Profiles of the Leadership Team

Ms. Mkawasi Mcharo

Ms. Mkawasi Mcharo currently works as a scholar and instructor on War and the Emergence of Nations, Language, and Performing Arts. Additionally, she has more than 20 years of leadership and management experience.

She has actively participated in social justice and governance initiatives throughout her career. Moreover, she is a founding member and former chairperson of Kenya Community Abroad in the United States.

She played a significant role in efforts that contributed to securing dual citizenship in the Kenyan Constitution. Furthermore, she helped initiate Kenya’s first Presidential Debate. She has also published numerous works locally and internationally.

Mcharo is pursuing doctoral research at Howard University, focusing on political belonging and the emergence of nations. She holds a Master of Arts degree in Diplomacy from Norwich University, Vermont.

Additionally, she earned another Master of Arts degree in Theatre Arts from Hunter College, New York. She also holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Literature from the University of Nairobi.

Mr. David Makali

Mr. David Makali brings more than 30 years of experience in communication, journalism, and civil society. He currently works as a strategic and political communication specialist, editor, and political analyst.

Throughout his career, he has held senior editorial management positions in mainstream media and alternative journalism. Furthermore, Makali received the Press Freedom Warrior Award in 2025 from the Kenya Editors Guild.

He was also recognized as an Amnesty International Prisoner of Conscience after his imprisonment in 1994. The imprisonment followed his journalistic work defending press freedom.

Additionally, he survived an abduction and torture incident in Karura Forest in 1999. The incident followed an investigative report involving alleged government-linked drug trafficking and money laundering.

Makali holds a Master of Science degree in Journalism from Columbia University. He also earned a Post-Graduate Diploma in Journalism and Mass Communication from the University of Nairobi. Moreover, he holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from Moi University.
