‘Do Not Crucify Obado’: Sharon’s Mother Pleads With Court Ahead of Sentencing

As the former Migori Governor’s sentencing hearing is ongoing at the Milimani Law Courts, mother to Sharon Otieno, Melida Auma, has pleaded with the court to give Obado a non custodial sentencing.

The court hearing is taking place today, September 16, 2026, and the court is supposed to give Okoth Obado a sentence regarding the murder of Sharon Otieno in 2018.

Appearing before Justice Cecilia Githua at the Milimani High Court, Auma urged the court to consider a non-custodial sentence rather than imposing life imprisonment on Obado, whom she said she had forgiven despite the immense pain her family has endured since Sharon’s killing in 2018.

“Please do not crucify Governor Obado in his case,” Auma said.

Sharon’s Father

On the other hand, Sharon’s father, Douglas Otieno, also agrees with his wife, saying that Obado should be granted a non-custodial sentence because he is remorseful.

“After the judgment, Obado sent his relatives to my house for a reconciliation attempt. Because of his remorse, a non-custodial sentence is okay. But I am too bitter before this court seeing Oyamo and Casper,” Douglas said.

Additionally, he also told the court that Obado should be forgiven, but the others who were charged with him should remain behind bars because they lack remorse.

Sharon’s father said that he is bitter about what happened to his daughter, but he has forgiven Obado and pleads with the court to offer leniency.

“Oyamo and Casper are the people that met my daughter last. They are not remorseful,” said Douglas.

The court previously heard that Sharon’s family spent an estimated Ksh 4.7 million during the eight-year legal process, including about Ksh 3.5 million on funeral expenses and roughly Ksh 1.2 million attending court proceedings.

The Duration Of The Case

They also told probation officers they had sold family property to help meet those costs.

Obado, alongside his former personal assistant Michael Juma Oyamo and former Migori County official Caspal Ajwang Obiero, were convicted in July 2026 over Sharon Otieno’s murder after the court found the prosecution had proved the three participated in the murder.

During mitigation, Obado sought leniency, citing his age, health and the length of time the case had taken.

Obado has maintained his innocence although found guilty, saying he did not participate in Sharon’s murder and is requesting a non-custodial sentence.
