The case on the murder of Sharon Otieno, a Rongo University student who was abducted and killed in 2018, has taken a new turn after her family made fresh compensation demands ahead of former Migori Governor Okoth Obado’s sentencing.
According to Lawyer Danstan Omari, her family raised the demands during the probation process, with discussions between the two sides yet to produce an agreement.
Danstan Omari said the family is seeking compensation as well as the house they say Obado had promised Sharon.
He said the family is also demanding continued support for Sharon’s children and reimbursement for expenses incurred over the years while pursuing the case.
“Today, the former governor of Migori, Obado, came to inform the probation officer so he could take a report. In the introductory report, Sharon’s family, the oldest among them, is requesting compensation. They are asking for the house that Obado had promised Sharon,” Lawyer Omari said.
In addition, Omari said the family has cited costs associated with travelling to Nairobi and other expenses connected to the long-running case.
“They are demanding the plane they used to fly on. They are demanding that the OBADA continue to provide for the free children of the elderly Sharon. They are also demanding compensation. They are demanding the sale of their land and their dog to cover the costs of traveling to Nairobi for eight years in this case and many other expenses.”
He further said that the matter has been discussed between the parties, although no agreement has been reached.
Obado and Two Co-Accused Await Sentencing
The demands have emerged as part of the probation process preceding Obado’s sentencing, who was convicted alongside his former personal assistant Michael Oyamo and former Migori County Clerk Caspal Obiero over the 2018 murder of Sharon Otieno.
High Court Judge Cecilia Githua found that the prosecution had proved the murder case against the three beyond reasonable doubt.

Sharon, a Rongo University student, was abducted in September 2018, and her body and that of her seven-month unborn child were later found in Homa Bay County.
The court found that Obado, Oyamo and Obiero were criminally responsible for the killing and subsequently cancelled their bond terms pending sentencing.
