Electric Vehicle Surge Drives KPLC to Ksh 382M Charging Revenue

Kenya Power and Lighting Company has announced growth in income from the e-mobility sector, with electricity sales from electric vehicle (EV) charging reaching Ksh 382 million over 34 months.
In a press release dated May 21, Kenya Power said the growth reflects a sharp increase in EV adoption across the country, supported by expanding infrastructure and rising consumer demand for electric mobility solutions.
“Kenya Power has announced a record growth in income from the e-mobility sector with electricity sales surging by over 113% in three years and cumulatively earning KShs.382 million in revenue,” read part of the release.
According to the company, electricity sales to the e-mobility sector have grown by more than 113 times in three years, highlighting one of the fastest-growing segments in Kenya’s energy market.
Kenya Power Earns Ksh 382M From EV Charging as Adoption Surges in Kenya
Kenya Power highlighted that the monthly revenue rose from KSh 873,907 in July 2023 to a peak of Ksh 35 million in February 2026, showing a rapid growth in the use of EV charging services nationwide.
Additionally, the company reported that electricity consumption for EVs increased from 13,500 kWh to over 1.5 million kWh, with Nairobi accounting for 71% of total EV charging revenue, equivalent to a share of the Ksh 382 million total.

Kenya Power further argued that while Nairobi continues to lead, EV uptake is gradually expanding into other parts of the country, including the North Eastern, Western, and Coastal regions.
The company’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO ), Joseph Siror, said the growth confirms that electric mobility is no longer at the pilot stage.
“Our report shows that electricity sales to the e-mobility sector have grown 113-fold. This is clear evidence that EV adoption is no longer a pilot, but a mainstream reality,” he said.
Joseph Siror added that the opportunity is now national and requires expansion of EV infrastructure beyond major cities.
Nairobi Set For EV Conference to Bring Stakeholders Together
Kenya Power also revealed that more than 1,000 stakeholders from across East Africa are expected to attend the upcoming EV conference in Nairobi, which will focus on scaling electric mobility through policy, infrastructure development, and partnerships.
According to the company, the event will also showcase innovations in the EV ecosystem and discuss strategies to expand charging access across the country.

As part of the conference activities, Kenya Power and partners, including GIZ Kenya, Electric Mobility Association of Kenya (EMAK), and the Kühne Foundation, will roll out EV awareness parades along major corridors, including Nairobi–Mombasa and Nairobi–Kisumu routes.
In addition, the initiative will test charging infrastructure readiness along highways and address range anxiety concerns among EV users.
Kenya Power highlighted that it will also launch new charging stations in Voi and Nyali, Mombasa, while also introducing electric bikes for meter reading operations in Nakuru and Mombasa Island.
