FACT CHECK: Viral Claims Suggesting Barcelona and Liverpool to Play Friendly in Kenya

Share

On Thursday, April 30, 2026, several claims went viral on social media alleging that Catalan giants FC Barcelona and English side Liverpool FC are set to face off in a friendly match in Kenya on August 8.

According to reports attributed to a Spanish media outlet, Barcelona is considering a pre-season fixture against Liverpool in Nairobi as part of its summer tour plans.

The reports indicate that the proposal was discussed during a club management meeting focusing on the team’s external training camp and commercial activities ahead of the new season.

Barcelona–Liverpool Nairobi Match Claims Go Viral

It is claimed that Barcelona’s technical bench, led by head coach Hansi Flick, prefers a shorter and more convenient training camp focused on fitness and preparation, avoiding long-distance travel.

However, the club’s executive wing is reportedly keen on exploring international opportunities that would boost its global visibility and commercial reach.

As part of those considerations, Nairobi has been mentioned as a potential destination, with the club weighing between travelling to Kenya for a high-profile clash against Liverpool or heading to Morocco for an alternative friendly match.

Separate reports have also suggested that Liverpool, under manager Arne Slot, could be open to participating in the fixture, although details remain unclear.

If the match were to happen, it is likely to be staged at the upcoming Raila Odinga Talanta Stadium, a 60,000-seater facility nearing completion in Nairobi.

The potential fixture has already sparked excitement among fans, with expectations that it could feature top players such as Lamine Yamal, Raphinha and Robert Lewandowski for Barcelona, alongside Liverpool stars like Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai.

However, despite the growing speculation, neither Barcelona nor Liverpool has issued any official communication confirming the match, and no announcement has been made by organisers or Kenyan authorities.

Kenya’s History with High-Profile Friendlies

While the reported match remains unconfirmed, Kenya has previously hosted notable international club friendlies, particularly during the tenure of former Football Kenya Federation president Nick Mwendwa.
