Share

A viral social media post alleging that a Bolt driver identified as Victor threatened a passenger while armed has sparked widespread debate online after being reshared across multiple platforms and countries, including Kenya.

A fact-check by hivileo.co.ke confirms that Victor is from Nigeria, although the company has also clarified that the incident was blown out of proportion.

The post, which first circulated in Nigeria before resurfacing on other social media timelines days later, sparked heated discussions on customer safety and platform accountability.

However, Bolt West Africa has since clarified details surrounding the incident, stating that the circulating claims do not fully align with the findings of its internal review.

According to the company, it received a report involving a disagreement between a rider and a driver-partner.

However, it highlighted that at no point during the report or subsequent investigation was there any allegation that the driver was armed.

“While we received a report relating to an incident following a disagreement between a rider and a driver-partner, at no point during the report or subsequent review was any allegation made that the driver was armed,” Bolt said in its statement.

Bolt further noted that the matter was handled in line with its safety procedures, which resulted in the suspension of the driver-partner from the platform.

“The reported incident was reviewed in line with our safety procedures, and the driver-partner has been suspended from the platform as a result of our investigation,” the company added.

How People Have Reacted to the Claims

In regard to the allegations, some users urged caution and warned against spreading unverified information, arguing that the driver’s record on the platform suggested a history of consistent service.

They added that based on the driver’s rating and the number of completed trips, the viral claims did not align with his established performance on the platform and could therefore be misleading.

Others noted that ride history and customer ratings are often used as indicators of service quality and should be considered before concluding isolated allegations shared online.

However, not all users agreed, with some arguing that ride history does not necessarily determine a person’s character or behaviour.

“Someone having over 1k rides doesn’t mean he is a good person… this doesn’t mean he harasses everyone he gives a trip,” another user argued.
