Fear has gripped residents of Mwingi town in Mwingi Town, Kitui County, Kenya after authorities uncovered multiple human bodies in a suspected mass grave.

Police and forensic teams moved quickly to the scene on June 9, 2026, cordoning off the area as experts began an intensive exhumation exercise.

Officials continued the operation and suspected that more remains could still lie buried at the site.

In recent weeks, residents have grown increasingly concerned after officers recovered two other mutilated bodies of a man and a woman from the same area.

Earlier, investigators also found the woman’s body without a head, a detail that deepened public anxiety.

As a result, some locals believed the victims died elsewhere before someone dumped their bodies in Mwingi.

“There are bodies of people who have been killed and dumped here in our town. It is like people are being murdered elsewhere and their bodies brought here,” a resident of Mwingi, said.

“These incidents have been happening near Kasina Primary School, and as residents we are worried because last month other bodies were also found near the same area,” another resident said.

Kitui Woman Representative Irene Kasalu described the repeated discoveries as deeply disturbing and urged urgent investigations to establish what was happening.

“There is a body there and there are other spots where we do not know whether there are more bodies buried. In the last four weeks, this is the fourth body to be recovered here. These are very disturbing incidents,” Kasalu said.

“Just the other day we lost a young woman and we still do not know what happened. Apart from the female body that we know about, the other bodies are yet to be identified,” she added.

Police officers at the scene, led by Mwingi Central Police Commander Antony Maina, urged residents to assist with identification efforts.

Authorities also directed families with missing persons to report to Mwingi Central Police Sub-County Headquarters to support ongoing identification efforts as detectives worked to piece together what happened.

“All the bodies are naked and had been buried in separate graves. If anyone has a missing relative, please report to the police,” Antony Maina said.

Investigators transferred the bodies, which showed different stages of decomposition, to Mwingi General Hospital Mortuary for identification and post-mortem examinations.
