Five Arrested Over Fatal Armed Raid That Left Two Dead in Tharaka Nithi

Five suspects have been arrested by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) over a fatal armed raid that left two dead in Tonto Village, Kamwimbi Location in Tharaka Nithi County.
According to the DCI, the suspects were apprehended during a series of intelligence-led operations conducted between June 4 and June 8 by detectives from the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau (CRIB).
The incident occurred on the night of May 21, 2026, which left two people dead and two others seriously injured after a gang armed with firearms and crude weapons reportedly stormed a homestead at around 9 p.m.
Police said the attackers first assaulted and killed a man at the entrance of the compound before firing several bullets into the air, allegedly to scare away nearby residents.
Two Dead In Attack
The gang then proceeded deeper into the homestead, where they attacked and killed an elderly woman.
Two other victims sustained serious injuries during the attack and were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.
After the incident, detectives from CRIB headquarters took over the investigation and launched what the DCI described as an intensive intelligence-driven operation aimed at identifying those behind the attack.
The five suspects who have been arrested have been identified as Benson Mugendi Patrick, Kibet Collins Kemboi, Wilson Kinyua Nyaga, Josphat Nyaga Njue, and Joseph Kinyua Njeru, also known as Maruu.

DCI Investigations
According to the DCI, preliminary findings point to a well-planned criminal conspiracy.
The DCI said forensic analysis and intelligence reports played a key role in tracing and identifying the suspects linked to the killings.
The suspects are currently in custody, undergoing processing, awaiting their arraignment in court.
Investigations Ongoing
Meanwhile, detectives are continuing with investigations as they pursue additional suspects who are believed to have participated in the attack.

DCI said it remains committed to ensuring that all those involved in the killings are identified, arrested, and prosecuted.
The motive behind the attack has not yet been disclosed by the DCI as the investigation is still ongoing.
