Flight Chaos at JKIA as Air Traffic Control Strike Enters Another Day

The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) said flight movements at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) have been delayed or cancelled due to continued industrial action affecting Air Traffic Control services.

KAA stated in a status update released on August 31, 2026, that the interruption was still disrupting airline services at the nation’s largest international airport.

“As a result, some flights are experiencing delays and cancellations,” KAA said, advising passengers to confirm their flight status with their respective airlines before travelling to the airport.

The most recent disruption comes with the ongoing impact of industrial action on Air Traffic Control services, which are important to the coordination of aircraft movements at JKIA.

In order to work on the effects of the disruption and preserve safe airport operations, KAA said it was collaborating with airlines and other aviation stakeholders.

“KAA continues to work closely with airlines and other aviation stakeholders to mitigate the operational impact of the disruption and to facilitate the safe, secure and orderly operation of the airport,” the authority said.

The disruption has led to confusion, and customers traveling through JKIA are being advised to confirm if their flight is scheduled to operate before proceeding to the airport.

In its 31 August update, KAA did not mention how many flights were affected or how long the disruption was expected to last.

KAA Prioritizes Safety and Security

However, the authority said it remained ‘committed to ensuring the safety and security of passengers, airport users and the wider aviation community’.

“The safety and security of passengers, airport users and the wider aviation community remain our highest priority,” KAA said.

JKIA Flight Delay Advisory

The authority expressed regret to passengers and airport users for the disruption and disturbance caused by the delay and thanked them for their understanding and support.

For travelers with flights scheduled from or to JKIA, KAA’s advice is to contact their respective airlines and confirm flight status in advance before travelling to the airport.
