A story has been making the rounds on social media about how Somali women who live abroad settle their disputes by travelling to Kenya to fight because fighting abroad is illegal.

According to reports, when two Somali women in the diaspora disagree on anything, they cannot fight because it is illegal, so they book flights to Kenya and arrange a fighting date.

The fights are reportedly arranged in advance, with participants agreeing on a date and location before travelling to Kenya.

The reported practice has attracted significant attention on social media, where photos of the fights have gone viral, showing Somali women fighting.

Fights In Kenya

In the photos, Somali women are seen fighting while crowds of people are looking at them.

This has left people wondering whether a person could just book a flight in order to engage in a fight.

The trend is linked to the strict legal consequences of engaging in a fight in many Western countries, where people can face criminal charges, fines, and even deportation back to their country.

These reports have sparked a debate within Somali communities both in Kenya and abroad, with some Kenyans calling on the government to intervene, saying that Kenya has been turned into a battleground for Somali women.

Netizens have criticised the practice, saying that it encourages violence in the country and is not a good habit, and that the government should look into the matter.

Recent Case

After the Somali women finish fighting, they pack and go back to the countries they came from, like the United Kingdom, Sweden, Norway, and the United States.

There is a recent case that has been reported of two Somali women fighting in a restaurant in Eastleigh, Nairobi.

They started a fight abroad and had to travel to Kenya to fight and finish the matter.

People have called them out on social media, saying that they are destroying the image of the Somali people and are also destroying their culture, which they describe as respectful.

Anab said, “Eastleigh, Kenya, is now becoming a battleground… It is regrettable that the women who are supposed to be an image to emulate in society have turned themselves to this vice.”

Online Reactions

“Why does the Kenyan government allow them to get in Kenya if they are not Kenyan citizens? They should be arrested and deported. If they are Kenyan citizens, they should be arrested and taken to court and charged accordingly,” said Elijah.

Mohamed said, “I strongly support this call. Eastleigh is not a battleground. Those who engage in violence and public disorder must face the full force of the law, regardless of where they come from. Such behaviour puts residents, businesses and the reputation of the Somali community at risk.”

“We won’t allow Eastleigh to become a battleground venue where women travel all the way from abroad just to settle scores with their husband’s co-wives,” said Amin.

Atom said, “This is deeply concerning and shameful. Eastleigh should be a place of peace, business and dignity—not a battleground for personal conflicts. The authorities should take firm action to protect residents, traders and the reputation of our community.”

As many netizens continue to call upon the government of Kenya to intervene, there has been no official report that the government is aware of the matter and will deal with it.
