Former Kenya Army Major Jailed for Life Over Murder of His Two Children and Their Mother

A former Kenya Army Major, Peter Mugure, will spend life in prison after the High Court in Nyeri found him guilty of killing his two children and their mother in a planned attack in 2019.

Justice Martin Muya delivered the sentence after convicting Peter Mugure on all three counts of murder, with the sentences running at the same time.

“I respect that decision of the court, for it presently legally binds me. Nevertheless, with tremendous respect to the court, in principle I am unable to agree with the verdict,” Mugure told the court.

Prosecutors Jennifer Kaniu and Pithon Mwangi led the case and proved the charges beyond a reasonable doubt.

During the trial, the judge observed that Peter Mugure showed “no iota of remorse.” He also pointed to the rising cases of women and children being killed and stressed the need for strict punishment.

In addition, the court considered a victim impact statement from the family and prosecutors had urged the court to impose the death penalty due to the seriousness of the crime.

How Peter Mugure Killed His Family

According to the court, Peter Mwaura Mugure planned the attack in October 2019 while serving at Laikipia Air Base. He invited his family to the camp and made it appear like a normal visit.

On October 26, 2019, he killed his two children and later killed their mother. He then placed their bodies in his car and drove to a remote area where he dumped them.

Furthermore, witnesses told the court that Mugure had visited the same area three days earlier. During that visit, he arranged for a shallow grave, which showed clear planning.

Court Finds Strong Evidence

The court said the Prosecution presented “cogent, credible and consistent evidence” that “irresistibly pointed” to Mugure as the killer.

“I find that the acts committed were barbaric. Bearing in mind that the accused has been in custody, I sentence him to life imprisonment,” the court ruled.

Finally, the judge considered the time Mugure had already spent in custody before issuing the life sentence, bringing the case to a close.
