Former UoN VC Lands New Role Months After His Ouster

Former University of Nairobi (UoN) Vice Chancellor (VC) Professor Stephen Kiama has announced that he has taken up a new teaching role at the institution’s Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, months after his ousting as Vice Chancellor.

In a post shared on his social media page on September 9, 2026, he reflected on his long career in veterinary education, saying that he had returned to teaching the newest Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine class.

“Thirty-six years ago this month (September 1990), I began teaching Veterinary Anatomy as an Assistant Lecturer at the University of Nairobi, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine,” he wrote.

The professor said teaching has always remained a fulfilling part of his career, noting that he has seen many of his students excel in academia and veterinary practice over the years.

He Is Back To Teaching

“I have thoroughly enjoyed watching my students go on to excel in academia and practice over the years,” he said.

Additionally, Kiama said meeting and teaching the latest cohort of veterinary students renewed his optimism about the profession’s future.

“Yesterday, it was incredibly gratifying to meet and teach the newest Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine class. There is hope for the profession,” he stated.

His latest role comes months after he exited the position of Vice-Chancellor at the University of Nairobi, ending a tenure that attracted significant public attention and leadership changes.

The University of Nairobi’s Faculty of Veterinary Medicine is one of the country’s leading institutions for veterinary training and has produced thousands of professionals serving in animal health, research, academia and public service.

His return to the classroom to teach signals a shift from the university’s administration back to academic work, where he first started his career in 1990 as an assistant lecturer in veterinary anatomy.
