Harvard, MIT and Stanford Lead Global Rankings

The 2026 CWUR rankings were topped by some of the world’s most prestigious universities.

Harvard University claimed the number one position globally, followed by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in second place and Stanford University in third.

In Africa, the University of the Witwatersrand emerged as the continent’s highest-ranked university, followed by the University of Cape Town and Stellenbosch University.

Within East Africa, Makerere University recorded the region’s strongest performance, with the University of Nairobi following closely behind.

Growing Competition in Higher Education

Universities worldwide face increasing pressure to demonstrate excellence in research, innovation, graduate success, and social impact.

In Kenya, the number of chartered universities has continued to grow, making competition for academic distinction more intense than ever.

Against this backdrop, UoN’s performance stands out as a significant achievement.

The university says the ranking reflects the collective efforts of its faculty, researchers, staff, students, alumni, and partners who continue to contribute to its success.
