From 25 to 4: New DNA Results Shake Kafeero Family 20 Years After His Death

A fresh wave of controversy has engulfed the family of late Kadongo Kamu legend Paul Job Kafeero after DNA test results allegedly reduced the number of his biological children from 25 to just four, sparking outrage and intense public debate.
For nearly two decades, the dispute has persisted, now taking a dramatic turn as new findings suggest that only four of the individuals can be confirmed as the musician’s biological offspring.
The controversy surrounding the paternity of his children comes nearly two decades after the death of legendary Paul Job Kafeero on May 17, 2007, at just 36 years old.
Meanwhile, emerging reports indicate that the only confirmed biological children of the late singer are Benedicto Kafeero, Simon Peter, Thomas Swaz, and Elizabeth Nagawa.
As a result, the four now stand at the centre of the ongoing dispute, while questions continue to surround the other 21 individuals previously recognized as his children.

Kafeero Exhumation Marks Turning Point in DNA Dispute
In a major development, authorities oversaw the exhumation of Kafeero’s remains following a court order, marking the first scientific effort to verify long-standing paternity claims.
Through this process, investigators aimed to establish whether more than 20 individuals who have identified as his children are biologically related to the late musician.
At the same time, State Minister for Youth and Children Affairs Balaam Barugahara Ateenyi described the move as a turning point in the prolonged dispute.
“As I prepare to hand over the Youth and Children Affairs docket soon, I wish to inform the public that the long-standing paternity dispute involving over 20 young people allegedly fathered by my friend, the late Prince Paul Kafeero, will soon be resolved,” Balaam said.
Family Calls for Calm and Unity
Following the development, Kafeero’s brother, Vincent Mende, thanked the minister for taking up the matter and pushing it forward despite its sensitivity.
“I thank Minister Balaam for the good job. I approached him on this matter and he took it up. Kafeero started his own burial ground. I have seen people upset about me, but this was a tough issue,” Mende said.
“He cannot rest in peace when his family is not at peace. I ask the children to be calm. We are not here to fight over the late Paul Kafeero’s properties but to bring together his real family,” he added.
Family, Friend Urges Acceptance of Results
In addition, a family friend James Ssenkubuge urged those affected by the outcome to remain calm and focus on unity.
“We are here for the good of Paul Kafeero. Those who are upset, I ask for calmness. We want him to rest in peace. This situation should also serve as a lesson to other men and families out there to make better preparations for your families before you die,” he said.
As the debate continus, Paul left behind a legacy as one of Uganda’s most celebrated musicians.
