Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has acknowledged apparent disunity within the United Opposition, saying leaders differ on how to achieve their shared political objective.

Speaking during a visit to Kajiado on Saturday, August 8, Gachagua maintained that despite the differences, the opposition remains united around its main goal of removing President William Ruto from power.

“Ile iko pale hatuelewani ni how to do. We appear to be in disunity, but our main goal is that Ruto must go home,” Gachagua said.

Gachagua Says Opposition Leaders Share Common Goal

The DCP party leader maintained that the disagreements among opposition leaders should not be interpreted as enmity, saying they are based on different ideas on how to achieve their shared political objective.

He said the leaders were engaging in discussions and exploring different approaches that could be acceptable to everyone.

Gachagua said some leaders had proposed seeking advice from professors, while others suggested involving foreigners to advise them on how to remove Ruto.

He further said he had dismissed the idea of seeking assistance from foreigners, arguing that Kenyans should determine their own political direction.

Gachagua also rejected suggestions that the opposition should rely on opinion polls to determine its next course of action.

Instead, he called for the opposition to engage ordinary Kenyans, whom he described as the people with the power to make the final decision.

According to Gachagua, the opposition cannot achieve its objective through meetings held in hotels, workshops or seminars.

“We cannot remove him when we are in conversations in hotels. We cannot remove him while we are in workshops or seminars. We will remove Ruto when we go to the people,” he said.

He also revealed disagreements among opposition leaders over when they should name their preferred presidential candidate, adding that some want the candidate identified immediately, while others have proposed different timelines.

“We are just having different ideas by different people, and we are all talking and looking for a formula that is acceptable to everybody,” Gachagua said.

The former deputy president maintained that despite the differences, the opposition leaders remain focused on finding a common approach to their political objective.
