Gladys Wanga Opens Up About Her Cancer Battle

Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga has revealed that she is battling cancer, opening up about her experience with the disease and how it has influenced her plans to improve cancer care in the county.

Wanga disclosed while reflecting on her cancer journey, recalling the emotional impact the diagnosis had on her family. She said relatives were left crying as they struggled to come to terms with the news.

Rather than allow fear to overwhelm her, Wanga said she chose to remain hopeful and grateful for the opportunity to access treatment.

Wanga recalls cancer diagnosis

Wanga said she was advised to remain strong after the diagnosis, recalling a conversation with Senator Bert Mugo that helped shape her outlook.

She said Mugo told her that allowing fear to take over could be more damaging than the illness itself.

“It is your mind that is going to kill you. It is not the answer,” Wanga recalled Mugo telling her.

The governor said she also reflected on the fact that she had access to medical care after being elected to Parliament, something she viewed as an opportunity to be grateful for and that this experience has made her more aware of the challenges faced by patients who struggle to access specialised cancer care.

She noted that her journey has continued for years, expressing gratitude that she is still here and determined to keep going.

Homa Bay to expand cancer treatment

Wanga said her personal experience has strengthened her commitment to improving cancer services in Homa Bay.

She said chemotherapy services have already been introduced, while the county plans to establish radiotherapy services as part of a broader expansion of cancer treatment.

“Ultimately, we’re going to have every facility that you can get by God’s grace and by our determination here,” she said.

Wanga said the long-term goal is to ensure residents can access diagnosis and treatment within Homa Bay instead of travelling elsewhere to seek specialised care.

She described her disclosure as the beginning of a new journey and said she remained determined to continue with efforts to improve cancer care in the county.
