Govt Disburses Ksh 22.12 Billion for Student Scholarships and Loans, Extends Application Deadline

The government has extended the application deadline for tertiary education funding to September 21, 2026, giving university students and TVET trainees who missed the initial deadline another opportunity to apply.

In a statement, Education CS Julius Ogamba said the initial application window closed on August 31, 2026, with a total of 789,422 funding applications received by the deadline.

“Recognising that some eligible students and trainees may not have met the initial deadline on account of various causes, the Universities Fund and the Higher Education Loans Board have been directed to extend the application window for all eligible applicants to 21st September, 2026,” Ogamba said.

The government has also disbursed Ksh22.12 billion in first-semester and first-term funding to continuing university students and TVET trainees.

” As at that date, a total of 789,422 applications for funding had been received. The Government has already disbursed Ksh. 22. 12 billion in first semester/term funding to continuing university students and TVET trainees,” he said.

Julius Ogamba said both the Universities Fund and the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) had been directed to reopen the application window for all eligible first-time applicants until September 21, urging students to submit their applications within the extended period.

The ministry further clarified that applications that will be received during the extension period will be processed under the current Student-Centred Funding Model.

Additionally, the transitional mechanisms towards the proposed Universal Access and Funding Framework will only be implemented once Parliament passes the Tertiary Education Placement and Funding Bill, 2026.

“Appropriate transitional mechanisms to the Universal Access and Funding Framework shall be implemented once Parliament passes the Tertiary Education Placement and Funding Bill, 2026,” the statement said.

This announcement offers another opportunity for eligible first-time university and TVET students who had not completed their funding applications before the initial deadline to access government financial support for their education.
