The Deputy County Commissioner (DCC) for Oloilalei, Andrew Mwiti, has announced strict measures targeting illegal charcoal transport and uncontrolled tree cutting as part of efforts to protect the environment.
Mwiti said the government has outlawed indiscriminate tree-cutting, noting that charcoal produced through illegal logging continues to be transported via local road networks despite existing restrictions.
“We are banning the indiscriminate cutting of trees. The charcoal that is cut or burned is still being transported through our roads, despite previous restrictions,” said Andrew Mwiti.

The permits must clearly indicate the vehicle registration details and authorization for the charcoal being transported.
Mwiti further instructed that any vehicle found without proper documentation should be taken to the nearest police station.
He added that both the charcoal and the vehicle will be confiscated, while the owners will face prosecution.
In addition, Andrew Mwiti highlighted that enforcement will involve coordination between national government administrative officers and county officials to ensure strict compliance with environmental regulations.

He noted that trees play a crucial role in attracting rainfall, while grass supports livestock feeding, urging residents to avoid harmful practices that degrade the environment.
“We need to have a good plan. The grass should be for feeding livestock, and trees to attract water. We need to stop this habit of cutting down trees,” said DCC.
Mwiti called for a coordinated and structured approach to curb illegal logging and charcoal burning, saying it is necessary to safeguard natural resources for future generations.
