Kenyan gospel singer Guardian Angel has opened up about the backlash he faced after marrying his wife, Esther Musila, affecting his relationships within the church and his music ministry.
Speaking about the experience in a video posted on his Instagram account, Guardian Angel said some Christians criticised his decision to marry a woman older than him.
He explained that he faced rejection from people he had worked with for years in church.
“The wife I married is a bit older than me. Christians insulted me and spoke badly about me. Have you ever found love outside the church instead of inside?” he said.
Guardian Angel Marriage to Esther Musila Changes Church Support
Guardian Angel said his marriage to Esther Musila changed how some churches treated him, revealing that church invitations reduced after the wedding, despite having spent years performing at different church events.
Before his marriage, Guardian Angel maintained a busy schedule. He performed in churches throughout the week, worked with pastors, and regularly attended church gatherings.
“And you know before that I was very busy. I used to minister in churches from Monday to Monday. I was busy with pastors, friends from Thika and other places; then I got married, and they just picked me apart. The calls stopped. Those meetings that were once busy were no longer there; they replaced me,” he said.
The gospel singer said the sudden change surprised him because he had built strong connections within the church community before his marriage.
Marriage Faces Public Attention
The gospel singer married Esther Musila on January 4, 2022, in a private ceremony held on his birthday.
He proposed to her earlier on May 28, 2021, during Musila’s 51st birthday celebration.
The couple first met in 2020 after media personality Maina Kageni introduced them.
Before proposing, Guardian Angel shared a message on Instagram praising Musila for transforming his life.
“I was empty, you filled up the space. I was incomplete, you completed me. I almost gave up on my career, you came into my life when a lot of things were falling apart but within a short while you transformed everything and brought my life into a beautiful shape. Since the first day I fell in love with you, I have always been confident that you are the one. I am proud I chose you. You have made me believe that there is true love. It is amazing how you love me. I can go on and on my love but for now let me wish you blessings. Rada yako itazidi kubadilika. A year older, a year closer to my heart. I love you so much,” he wrote.
The couple has continued to face criticism because of their 20-year age difference. However, they have remained together and continue to share moments from their marriage.
Despite the criticism from the church, Guardian Angel said the experience helped him understand that support can come from unexpected places.
