How a Hidden Camera Exposed Kenyan Caregiver Abusing 90-Year-Old Man in US

A hidden camera installed to monitor a 90-year-old bedridden man exposed his Kenyan caregiver abusing him, triggering a case that ended with her fleeing the United States, returning to Kenya and later being extradited to Baltimore to face justice.

Anastacia Oluoch had been hired by Jaki Taylor to care for her 90-year-old father, John Taylor, in Maryland.

Concerned about her father’s treatment, Taylor secretly installed a camera inside the home to monitor Oluoch.

On May 19, 2007, Taylor reviewed the footage and discovered Oluoch repeatedly assaulting her father while he lay in bed. She immediately reported the matter to police, who arrested Oluoch on May 20, 2007.

According to Taylor’s court statements, the camera captured several instances of abuse. The footage showed that the abuse was not an isolated outburst of anger but a pattern of physical violence against the elderly man.

The hidden camera captured Oluoch punching the bedridden man in the stomach and slapping his hands while changing his diapers. Another recording showed her delivering closed-fist strikes and handling him aggressively while he remained defenseless in bed.

After her first arrest, Oluoch was released on bail but later fled to Kenya. Authorities spent five years trying to bring her back to Maryland before returning her in 2012 to face the case.

Taylor said the surveillance footage became a key piece of evidence against Oluoch. Prosecutors also said the video showed her repeatedly punching the elderly man while he lay defenseless in bed.

The case eventually ended with Oluoch changing her plea. In February 2013, she pleaded guilty in a Baltimore court to three counts of abusing a vulnerable adult and received a six-year prison sentence.

Taylor welcomed the guilty plea, saying: “I am satisfied. I am very happy. I am at peace with it all.”

Vulnerable Adult Protection

Baltimore City State’s Attorney Gregg Bernstein said the conviction sent a strong warning against mistreating vulnerable people.

“I think it sends an extremely strong message that we will not tolerate people abusing our most vulnerable adults,” Bernstein said.

Case Resolution Evidence

Taylor also credited the surveillance evidence with helping bring the case to a conclusion after years of uncertainty.

“With God, all things are possible, and this has been definite proof of that. You just keep going. There’s no time to give up,” she said.

Oluoch’s case was ultimately resolved nearly six years after the footage that triggered the investigation was recorded, after her flight to Kenya had delayed the proceedings.
