How to Apply for KRA Tax Refund in 2026

Kenyan taxpayers who have overpaid taxes or qualify for tax exemptions can apply for a refund through the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) iTax portal.

The online process allows eligible taxpayers to claim refunds and have the money deposited directly into their bank accounts after KRA reviews and approves the application.

A tax refund may arise for different reasons, including tax exemptions for persons living with disabilities, excess tax deductions, or other approved claims.

What You Need Before Applying

Before starting the application, ensure you have documents supporting your refund claim. These may include a tax exemption certificate, tax payment records, or any other documents required by KRA.

If you have any outstanding tax liabilities, penalties, or interest, you may first be required to clear them before submitting a refund application.

You should also have your bank account details ready, as KRA will send the approved refund directly to the account provided during the application process.

Steps to Apply for a KRA Tax Refund

To begin, log in to your iTax account using your KRA PIN and password.

Once logged in, navigate to the “Refunds” section and select “Income Tax Refund.”

On the Basic Information page, review the details displayed and click “Next” to proceed.

You will then be required to fill in your bank details, including the bank name, branch, city or town, account name, and account number.

Taxpayers are advised to carefully verify these details before submission to avoid delays or payments being sent to the wrong account.

Filling in the Claim Details

After entering your bank details, proceed to the Claim Details section.

Select the refund type as “Normal” and indicate the reason for the refund claim. For example, a taxpayer applying for a disability tax exemption can state “Tax Exemption” as the reason.

The system will automatically display the amount available for refund and the tax years eligible for the claim.

Check the box for the year or years you wish to apply for and confirm the refund amount shown on the system.

Upload Supporting Documents

Applicants must upload supporting documents to prove they qualify for the refund.

For instance, taxpayers claiming a refund due to a disability tax exemption should upload a valid tax exemption certificate.

Ensure the document is clear, complete, and in the format accepted by the iTax system before attaching it to the application.

Submit and Wait for KRA Feedback

Once all information has been entered correctly, review the details and submit the application.

The system will generate an acknowledgement receipt confirming that the refund request has been successfully submitted. Taxpayers should download and save this receipt for future reference.

KRA will then review the application and supporting documents. If everything is in order, the refund will be processed and paid into the bank account provided.

Applicants will also receive updates and further communication through their registered email address.
