I Thought We’d Keep It Private” Mercy Makini Hits Back at Morara Kebaso

Mercy Makini has hit back at Morara Kebaso after he publicly addressed their separation, six months after she says she walked away privately and chose not to discuss the matter on social media.

Makini broke her silence after Kebaso posted a statement about his family and private life, saying he had learnt from past experiences that keeping quiet could allow people to create their own version of events.

His remarks appeared to address the growing public interest in his relationship and the circumstances surrounding his separation from Makini.

While Kebaso said he did not want to discuss his family online, he described Makini as the mother of his three children, Zainah Morara, Garang Morara and MK Junior, and urged the public to continue treating her with respect.

Makini, however, questioned why a matter she had deliberately kept private had now been brought before the public.

Mercy says she chose to keep the separation private

According to Makini, she had spent the past six months keeping the separation away from social media out of respect for everyone involved.

Her decision to remain silent, she said, was deliberate, even as public interest in the situation continued to grow.

“I walked away privately, I thought we would keep it private!” Makini said.

She accused Kebaso of changing the nature of the conversation by taking their private situation to social media, saying she had initially chosen to be “the bigger person” rather than publicly discuss what had happened between them.

“For the past six months, I have chosen to be the bigger person and keep this matter private out of respect for everyone involved,” she said.

Makini said Kebaso’s decision to speak publicly had now compelled her to respond, accusing him of portraying himself as the victim.

“It’s quite unfortunate that you’ve decided to play the victim. Allow me to respond!” she added.

Her response suggests that while the separation had remained largely away from public discussion, she believes Kebaso’s latest statement has changed the situation.

Makini questions mention of their children

Makini also took issue with Kebaso mentioning their three children while speaking about the family.

She questioned his knowledge of their welfare over the six months since she says she walked away, making it clear that she did not want their children used to strengthen his public account of the situation.

“Where do you get the moral authority to mention kids that you have no idea what they’ve been eating for the last 6 months?” she asked.

Makini further accused Kebaso of disrespecting her privately and questioned why the alleged disrespect had not remained private as well.

“You’ve disrespected me in private; I thought you would just keep the disrespect private!” she said.

Kebaso, in his statement, maintained that he had the permission and blessing of his family to continue serving the nation as a leader and said he wanted to remain focused on that role.

He also expressed support for Pauline, saying she was doing a great job and encouraging her to maintain what needed to be maintained, fix what needed to be fixed and ignore what needed to be ignored.
