IRA Publishes Full List of Licensed Insurance Companies as of 2026

The Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA) has published a comprehensive list of insurance companies licensed to operate in Kenya in 2026.

In a gazette notice dated Thursday, April 30, 2026, the Commissioner of Insurance said the firms listed are authorised to transact various classes of insurance business in line with the law.

“Pursuant to Section 184 of the Insurance Act, the Commissioner of Insurance gives notice that the following insurers are licensed to transact insurance business,” the notice read in part.

Reinsurers Listed by IRA

The IRA named five reinsurers approved to operate in the country. These include Continental Reinsurance Limited, East Africa Reinsurance Company Limited, Ghana Reinsurance Company (Kenya) Limited, Kenya Reinsurance Corporation Limited and WAICA Reinsurance (Kenya) Limited.

Most of the reinsurers were authorised to underwrite a wide range of insurance classes, with some also licensed for specialised long-term categories.

General Insurers

The regulator also released a long list of general insurance companies licensed in Kenya. They include major players such as AAR Insurance (Kenya) Limited, APA Insurance Limited, Britam General Insurance Company (K) Limited, CIC General Insurance Limited, Jubilee Health Insurance Limited, Kenindia Assurance Company Limited and Old Mutual General Insurance Kenya Limited.

Other firms on the list are Directline Assurance Company Limited, GA Insurance Limited, Madison General Insurance Kenya Limited, Pioneer General Insurance Limited, Sanlam Allianz General Insurance (Kenya) Limited and Takaful Insurance of Africa Limited, among others.

These companies are authorised to offer different classes of general insurance business, ranging from motor, medical and fire to marine and liability covers.

Life Insurance Companies

In the long-term (life) category, the IRA listed 22 licensed firms. They include ABSA Life Assurance Kenya Limited, APA Life Assurance Limited, Britam Life Assurance Company (K) Limited, CIC Life Assurance Limited and Jubilee Life Insurance Limited.

Others are ICEA LION Life Assurance Company Limited, Liberty Life Assurance Kenya Limited, Old Mutual Life Assurance Kenya Limited, Prudential Life Assurance Kenya Limited and Sanlam Allianz Life Insurance (Kenya) Limited.

These insurers are authorised to offer life-related products such as life assurance, pensions and investment-linked policies.

Micro-insurers

The notice further identified five licensed micro-insurance providers. These are APA Microinsurance Limited, Birdview Micro Insurance Limited, Britam Microinsurance Company (K) Limited, CIC Microinsurance Limited and Turaco Microinsurance Limited.

All micro-insurers were authorised to transact Class 13 insurance business, which typically targets low-income earners with affordable and simplified insurance products.
