Kalonzo Pays Emotional Tribute to Makindu Motors Boss Killed Alongside Wife

Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka has mourned Makindu Motors founder Stephen Ngei and his wife Giannaphina Mumbua, who died in a road accident along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway.
In a statement issued on Saturday, June 20, 2026, Kalonzo expressed deep sorrow over the deaths of the couple following the tragic accident at Masimba.
“It is with profound sorrow and a heavy heart that I received the devastating news of the passing of my dear friend, Stephen Ngei, and his beloved wife, Giannaphina Mumbua, following a tragic road accident at Masimba along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway,” Kalonzo said.
Kalonzo Mourns Stephen Ngei
The opposition leader described Ngei as a self-made entrepreneur whose journey from humble beginnings inspired many Kenyans.
According to Kalonzo, Ngei started as a second-hand clothes hawker before building Makindu Motors Ltd into one of Kenya’s most successful automobile assembling companies.
“Through vision, perseverance, and unwavering commitment, he created opportunities for many and became a source of inspiration to countless young people across Kenya,” he said.

The former Vice President said the country had lost a remarkable entrepreneur whose impact would be felt for generations.
On behalf of his family and the Wiper Patriotic Front, Kalonzo extended his condolences to the couple’s children, relatives, friends, and all those affected by their deaths.
“May the Almighty grant you strength, comfort, and peace during this difficult time,” he said.
Former Machakos Senator Johnstone Muthama also mourned the couple, describing Ngei as a hardworking and humble businessman whose contribution to the automobile industry will not be forgotten.
“Stephen will be remembered as a hardworking, humble, and dedicated individual whose contributions to the automobile industry and impact on many lives will not be forgotten,” Muthama said.
Kibwezi MP Mwengi Mutuse said he received the news with great shock and disbelief, describing Ngei as one of Ukambani’s most successful entrepreneurs.
“Mr. Ngei rose from extremely humble beginnings to become a highly industrious entrepreneur. His remarkable journey inspired many and contributed immensely to job creation and the socio-economic growth of our region,” Mutuse said.

Stephen Ngei Musyoka was the founder and Chief Executive Officer of Makindu Motors Ltd, a Kenyan company involved in the assembly and sale of motorcycles and other motor vehicles, including the Skygo motorcycle brand.

Ngei started his business journey as a hawker selling second-hand clothes (mitumba) and household items before establishing Makindu Motors Ltd.

His business also created employment opportunities and contributed to economic activity in Makueni County and the wider Ukambani region.
