The Ministry of Health, together with the World Health Organization, on June 19, 2026, kicked off distribution of Ksh 43 million worth of maternal health equipment to 45 hospitals across 11 counties, beginning with Madiany Sub-County Hospital in Siaya County.

Principal Secretary in the State Department for Medical Services Dr. Ouma Oluga, officially handed over 108 electric obstetric beds and lifesaving commodities through Every Woman, Every Newborn, Everywhere (EWENE) campaign aimed to strengthen care for mothers and newborns and end preventable deaths.

“This investment underscores the Government’s dedication towards the betterment of maternal and newborn health outcomes and further promotion of Universal Health Coverage through equitable access to high-quality healthcare services, financial risk protection, and strengthening of primary healthcare systems,” said Dr. Oluga.

New Medical Equipment Boosts Hospital Capabilities and Maternal Care in Siaya County

County and national government officials observed that the equipment would significantly bolster the hospital’s ability to facilitate deliveries and emergency situations.

Madiany Sub-County Hospital handles a vast number of pregnancies, and Siaya County is among the counties that have shown disparities in terms of maternal health.

Dr.Oluga also encouraged healthcare institutions to incorporate better quality assurance frameworks and said the proposed Quality Healthcare and Patient Safety Bill is a blueprint for bringing both accountability and progressive advancement.

“I implore all healthcare institutions to actively implement quality assurance mechanisms that facilitate the provision of safe, effective and person-centered care,” he remarked.

Healthcare Financing to Household Income Stability

The Principal Secretary went on to connect the overall prosperity of healthcare financing reforms with household economic stability and the regularity of social health insurance payments by households with constant sources of income.

“It is anticipated that the provision of the equipment will increase the hospital’s capability to offer quality maternal and newborn care and contribute to efforts towards eradicating preventable maternal and newborn deaths in the County of Siaya,” the Ministry announced.

This delivery is part of a comprehensive collaboration between the Ministry of Health and WHO across 11 priority counties.

The event was attended by Siaya County Chief Officer for Health, National Government Administration Officers representatives as well as Madiany Sub-County and Bondo Sub-County hospital officials. According to the officials, delivery to the remaining 44 hospitals will proceed within the next few weeks.
