KeNHA Announces 30-Day Traffic Disruption at Kisumu's Coptic Roundabout

Motorists using the Mamboleo-Kiboswa (A1) Road in Kisumu should prepare for traffic disruptions following the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA)’s announcement of a 30-day partial closure at the Coptic Roundabout.

According to a public notice issued on July 13, 2026, the affected section will be partially closed from July 20 to August 18, 2026, to allow the removal of the existing roundabout and the reconstruction and realignment of the road.

The latest closure adds to a series of traffic management measures introduced by KeNHA in June and July as the authority continues upgrading major highways across the country.

Reconstruction Aims to Improve Traffic Flow

KeNHA said the temporary closure is necessary to facilitate the reconstruction of the busy roundabout and improve traffic movement along the A1 highway, one of the main transport corridors linking Kisumu with western Kenya.

The authority noted that the works involve removing the current roundabout and redesigning the road section to enhance efficiency and safety for motorists.

KeNHA Urges Motorists to Exercise Caution

Authority has advised drivers to plan their journeys and follow all traffic directions during the construction period.

“During this period, motorists are, therefore, advised to exercise caution, adhere to traffic signs, and cooperate with the police officers and traffic marshals on site,” the authority said.

Traffic marshals and police officers will be deployed to guide motorists through the affected section and help minimize congestion.

Recent Road Closures Across Kenya

The Coptic Roundabout project is the latest in a series of road improvement works announced by KeNHA over the past two months.

In June 2026, the authority announced a temporary partial closure at the Mombasa Road (A8) and Eastern Bypass interchange to facilitate the construction of a box culvert aimed at improving drainage and reducing flooding along the highway.

The works affected motorists travelling towards Mombasa, with KeNHA providing alternative routes to ease traffic.

KeNHA also announced a partial closure of Waiyaki Way near the Westlands Roundabout as construction continued on the Nairobi Intelligent Transport System (ITS) and road improvement project.

The authority warned motorists to expect delays and urged them to cooperate with traffic officers managing the affected section.

Authority Apologises for the Inconvenience

The highways authority acknowledged that the construction works may inconvenience road users but appealed for patience as the project progresses.

“KeNHA regrets any inconvenience caused and appreciates the patience and cooperation of all road users,” the authority said.
