Kenya Power on the Spot Again as Customers Report Errors Buying Tokens After Blackout

Kenya Power has come under scrutiny after customers reported difficulties and errors while attempting to purchase electricity tokens after the blackout on Wednesday, July 29, 2026.

Reports indicate that Kenya Power prepaid systems have been down since the blackout, and Kenyans are not able to purchase tokens.

Several customers logged on to social media to protest that they were unable to buy tokens via M- PESA or any other payment method.

The customer has provided screenshots reporting possible payment failures.

One customer wrote to Kenya Power: “Transaction failed. ‘M-PESA cannot complete payment to KPLC PREPAID. Please try again shortly.’ Is there a known outage or any ongoing maintenance?”

Another customer posted: “I can’t seem to purchase my token… Transaction failed. M-PESA cannot complete payment of Ksh100.00 to KPLC PREPAID. Please try again shortly.”

A separate customer reported experiencing the same issue since Wednesday, writing: “Been trying to purchase electricity tokens since yesterday but keep getting the below message… is there a problem?”

The noted disruption in token purchases comes hours after Kenya Power said power had been restored to all regions following a nationwide outage on Wednesday.

Widespread Power Outage Affecting Multiple Regions in Kenya

The complaint comes after Kenya Power reconnected the power supply to all the places affected following a power interruption last night on Wednesday, 29th July 2026.

“We wish to inform our esteemed customers that we are experiencing a widespread power outage affecting customers in Nairobi, Coast, Mt Kenya and parts of Central Rift. However, parts of North Rift and Western regions are on supply,” Kenya Power said in a statement.

Widespread Power Outages and Token Reporting Failures in Kenya

The electricity supplier remains silent on what caused the blackout and announced on Thursday morning that the power was out again in every area that was blacked out for several hours.

A blackout was experienced by customers in Nairobi, the Coast region, Mt. Kenya, and northern parts of Central Rift.

The cause of the token reports failures is still not known.

Kenya Power has not issued any official document addressing the issue.
