Kenya Power Explains Power Outages in Parts of Nairobi

Kenya Power has announced planned power maintenance in several parts of the country on Sunday, August 30, 2026, as customers in some areas reported unexpected blackouts.

The utility company said the scheduled interruptions were necessary to allow maintenance work on the electricity network.

However, several Nairobi residents said they had experienced power outages in areas that were not included in the official maintenance schedule.

According to Kenya Power, parts of Likoni Road and Road C in Nairobi were scheduled for an interruption from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The affected areas include Ideal Paints Likoni Road, Capitol Laundry, Jaykish Traders, C&P Shoes, Park View Apartments, East Africa Spectre, Panari Hotel, DTB Mombasa Road, Airtel headquarters, Olesereni, Equity Bank Mombasa Road, Express Kenya, Diamond Estate, Balozi Estate and Park Side Towers.

The company said customers in neighbouring areas could also experience interruptions during the maintenance.

Kenya Power advised customers to check its latest maintenance schedule for updates and use its Nuru chatbot for assistance.

Nairobi Residents Report Unscheduled Blackouts by Kenya Power

Despite the scheduled maintenance, several customers used social media to report power outages in areas that were not listed.

A customer identified as Sheeko told Kenya Power that there was no electricity in Thamanda.

Martin reported a blackout around the toll station in Juja, near the weighbridge, saying the outage had become too frequent.

“We have a blackout around the toll station, Juja, at the weighbridge. It’s become too much now,” Martin said.

Another customer, Kamwiretu, said power had gone off at 9 a.m. despite the area not appearing on the maintenance list.

“We have had a blackout since 9 a.m., yet we are not on that list,” Kamwiretu said, asking Kenya Power to restore electricity.

Kimbo and Ruiru Customers Raise Concerns

Residents of Kimbo and Ruiru also reported outages on Sunday morning, August 30.

Patoo said power went off at 9 a.m. around Kimbo and Ruiru, opposite Spur Mall along Bensum Road.

“Power went off at 9:00 a.m. at Kimbo/Ruiru, yet the area is not in the list nor near any of the areas scheduled for maintenance today. Kindly restore,” Patoo said.

Another customer, Shivroy, questioned the frequency of Sunday outages in the area.

“Good morning, I don’t understand why this is now routine almost every Sunday, yet we are never under maintenance,” Shivroy said.

She added that the area near Edmak had been without electricity since morning.

More Outages Reported in Nairobi and Beyond

Imran reported that South C’s Akiba Estate along Jina Avenue had been without electricity since the previous night.

Other customers outside Nairobi also sought help from Kenya Power.

Dennis asked the company to restore power on a line serving Maranda High School in Bondo.

“We need help in restoring power on this line,” Dennis said.

The reports suggest that some of the outages experienced by customers may have been unrelated to the planned maintenance announced for Sunday.

Kenya Power has not, in the responses provided, given a specific explanation for each of the reported outages.

Other Areas Scheduled for Maintenance

Kenya Power also scheduled maintenance in several other regions.

In Naivasha, Nakuru County, power interruptions were planned from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in areas including Maxim, Bohemian, Kamere, OR Power Housing, KenGen Plaza and Housing, High Lift Pump, Oserian and Msambweni.

In Uasin Gishu County, Pan Paper Market and surrounding areas were scheduled for maintenance from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

In Kisumu County, Karebe Gold Mine and neighbouring areas were scheduled for an interruption from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Kenya Power said the interruptions were part of network maintenance and apologised for the inconvenience caused to customers.
