Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale has said he will contest the Kakamega governor’s seat on the political vehicle selected by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna if it is different from the United Patriotic Movement (UPM).

The declaration comes as the Linda Mwananchi Movement prepares for the next phase of its 2027 presidential campaign after settling on Sifuna as its leader and presidential candidate.

Speaking about Sifuna’s pending decision on the party he will use to pursue the presidency, Khalwale said UPM members had agreed to support him if he opted for another political vehicle.

“They have also resolved that should Edwin Sifuna announce a party other than UPM as the party on which he will vie in Linda Mwananchi, whatever the name of that party, we have resolved, they have resolved as founder members and members of NEC that they will then take this beautiful certificate of UPM, put it on the shelves and wholeheartedly support Edwin Sifuna and nominate me to run on Edwin Sifuna’s party as the governor of Kakamega in 2027,” Khalwale said.

Khalwale Gives Sifuna Final Say

According to Khalwale, UPM founder members and members of its interim National Executive Council had agreed to give Sifuna the freedom to choose the political vehicle for the 2027 presidential race.

He said the group would also support Sifuna if he selected UPM.

“If Edwin Sifuna, when he announces his party, he will announce that he’s running on United Patriotic Movement ticket, these founder members and members of the interim NEC have resolved that they will welcome him with both hands so that he flies the presidential flag of Linda Mwananchi on UPM,” Khalwale said.

Meanwhile, the Linda Mwananchi Movement endorsed Sifuna as its leader and presidential candidate during a September 26 principals’ retreat attended by Khalwale, Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino and Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi.

Earlier, Khalwale said the group had considered several political parties before giving Sifuna the final say on the vehicle to be used in the 2027 presidential race.

UPM Already Fully Registered

Notably, UPM is already a fully registered political party, having obtained full registration from the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP) on June 25, 2026.

As a result, UPM is an existing political vehicle as the Linda Mwananchi group considers its options ahead of the 2027 General Election.
